Counselling & Psychotherapy

Introduction

My work experience has enabled me to work with people from all over the world, and I am confident in working trans-culturally or with language support, I am deeply appreciative of difference and diversity.

I have worked with people who have faced many difficulties in life, finding relationships difficult, or family dynamics hard to be in, experiencing life changes and big transitions, or healing from childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, organized violence and torture. These experiences can have a profound impact on relationships, and lead to ongoing challenges such as complex trauma, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sadness, grief and loss.

Life is full of ups and downs, sometimes you might need a bit of extra support to get you through a particular challenge or crisis. Whatever your reason is for looking for a therapist, you have probably decided something in your life needs to change. Therapy can provide a non-judgemental space where you can explore what’s going on for you.

You may have something you need to talk about, or perhaps you are not sure why you are feeling the way you do. At times things can just be overwhelming, and sometimes that leaves us feeling critical of ourselves. Together we would work towards understanding what is happening and finding a resolution to the challenges you face.

I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, including ecotherapy so that I can work in a way that responds to your needs and provides you with the kind of support you are looking for. My core training in Psychotherapy is Transactional Analysis.

Online Therapy

Online Therapy is a really accessible way to make use of therapy. I offer online sessions using the online platform zoom. Before we begin, I would offer you a half hour telephone consultation.

During that call we would discuss what you would like to happen as a result of attending therapy, how we might want to work together and also some of the practicalities of working online, such as the need for a private space where you will not be disturbed.

We would also discuss together the potential frequency of our online meetings. If you would like to set up an introductory call to work out if online therapy might be of benefit to you, please email.

I will endeavour to respond to your enquiry within 5 working days

Outdoors Therapy

I work outdoors with individuals for the duration of one hour, with the opportunity to extend the length of sessions by negotiation. Outdoor sessions take place at pre-arranged locations. Some are accessible by public transport, and some are more remote. You can look at the locations I work in by clicking here. I only arrange meetings in places I have a good pre-existing knowledge of.

Outdoor therapy can take many forms including simply moving and talking together, finding a space to rest and talk, or by making use of the support nature can offer to help us bring things into awareness, this involves working creatively with what nature offers and includes practices integrated from Ecotherapy..

Working outdoors can add a lot to our work together, and also bring some practical challenges. All of the locations I work at are open to the public, we may meet other people, or come upon distractions, but all of the locations also have places where we will find privacy. We will agree what to do if we meet other people, dogs or livestock during our introductory call. We will work together to maintain confidentiality.

I have a good working knowledge of the landscape of all the locations that we might meet in. For all outdoor work it is important that you wear appropriate clothing, especially waterproof boots/shoes, and you might find it helpful to bring a warm drink on colder days and some water.

I work outdoors in most weather, however we will make a plan for adverse weather events and discuss what feels comfortable for you based on your past experiences of being outdoors.

How I work

Transactional Analysis is my core training, and over the years I have developed an integrative practice drawing on post qualifying training and experience. I am influenced by ecological and systemic perspectives and integrate Ecotherapy into my psychotherapy practice. I am interested in how we can work creatively together and collaborate on not only where you want to go but also how we get there.

The therapeutic relationship we cocreate is important and I endeavour to build a collaborative and respectful relationship that can both provide a space for reflection and awareness, and also challenge. This is all held with a commitment to anti-oppressive practice and a wider ecological perspective.

I am infinitely curious about the stories we tell; about ourselves, about others and about the world around us, and at times the stories we tell so often, they almost become unheard. I like to work creatively, focussing on thoughts, feelings, behaviours and our body sensations and hold those stories within a wider ecological, systemic and intersectional lens. I am also interested in how our memories, associations and sense of self are shaped by our relationship with environment. When working outdoors nature is invited as a cofacilitator and I often integrate practices from ecotherapy into my work.

The basic principles of TA are:

We are all born OK as people.

Everyone has the capacity to think and make decisions.

With help, people can find their own answers and make new decisions.

Change is possible.
